The Just Culture Conduct Course for Healthcare Managers and Influencers


This 2.5-hour course enables healthcare professionals who judge the conduct of others and their key partners to learn and apply principles of Just Culture. The recommended audience includes senior administrative and clinical leaders, board members, frontline managers, human resource professionals, members of peer review committees, and professional licensing boards. 

This is the best way to advance proficiency in applying Just Culture across all organizational values in organizations currently using Just Culture as a system of workplace justice.  It is also suitable for onboarding new leaders in organizations with an established Just Culture.

As a result of active participation in this training module, learners will:

  1. Identify Just Culture as a system of workplace accountability and justice that drives psychological safety and measurable improvement.
  2. Describe the role of organizational mission and values in responding to conduct breaches in a Just Culture.
  3. Describe the rationale for suspending outcome when evaluating conduct in a Just Culture.
  4. List five categories of errors and choices that should be anticipated and managed in the workplace and the recommended organizational response to each.
  5. Differentiate effective coaching conversations from other verbal encounters  (e.g., education; verbal counseling; written warnings).
  6. List five standard questions to ask when evaluating conduct that poses an unacceptable threat to one or more organizational values.
  7. Apply findings from the five-question threshold investigation to investigate conduct breaches.
  8. Discuss how system design and management of errors and choices contribute to higher reliability.
  9. Use pathways in the Just Culture algorithms to evaluate and respond to single conduct breaches in complex healthcare environments.
  10. Describe management of repetitive conduct breaches in a Just Culture.
