OVERVIEW

Medical error and preventable harm are widely regarded as among the most common causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Many thousands of peer-reviewed articles have been published on the challenges facing patients and the healthcare practitioners that care for them.

To understand Patient Safety, this course will begin with the science of safety and then review vital lessons from other high-consequence industries. This course will describe the current thinking on patient safety and why effectively addressing the problem has been so elusive. Understanding and addressing the challenges will require a review of behavioral psychology, culture of safety, high reliability theory, human factors engineering, IT systems, and many other topics.
